Imagine you just walked in the door and blankets are on the floor, dirty dishes litter the sink and counters, and there are crumbs on the kitchen table and floor. Walking into this space is stressful; it can feel like the to-do list is looming over your head, and you are unable to cook a meal, eat a meal, or, at the very least, sit down until some semblance of order has returned to this space. Returning order to spaces that are cluttered and/or dirty often requires cleaning, organizing, decluttering, and/or reimagining the space.

Decorating styles:

If your life feels busy, full, and unending, then a minimalist space may be exactly how you could focus on ‘decorating’/decluttering your home. This will create more space to rest in and ‘take a load off’. Other things that may be helpful are a robot vacuum, a robot mop, or hiring a cleaning service. And create routines that include, while you’re waiting for your food to cook, empty your dishwasher, but don’t leave that principle in the kitchen; use it all over the house, such as while your shower water is warming up, clean one space in your bathroom, such as the toilet, or the tub, or the counter and sinks. This will allow you to optimize your time and make your shower more relaxing, since when you exit your shower, you will find one less thing to do.

Perhaps you’re longing for a space to inspire your creativity. Then a space that might be considered more eclectic and full of character might be just the thing for you! Think about different textures and brighter colors; a space that stimulates the senses. Installing wallpaper or a fun backsplash may inspire you. Having an abundance of pillows, embellishments etc may make you smile! This style is known as maximalist.

Did you find that both of these styles appeal to you? There is a way to use both of these styles to your advantage. Your bedroom is to be a space of relaxation, so a minimalist ideology is a great way to approach decorating your bedroom space. The living room in a home is a great space to combine the minimalist and maximalist styles and express your decorating style while prioritizing the functionality of the space. A way to approach this ideology is to consider what would be cozy and inviting, but also the most functional. Consider adding a couple of fun pillows to each couch, having blankets stored in an orderly but accessible way, using warm lighting, and adding rugs and texture. Also, arrange your furniture in such a way that it fosters conversation. If you have an office space, it is the ideal space to fully express yourself, going all out with decorating, so that your creativity might be inspired when you use your office.

Why decorate?

“Emotional benefits: A nicely designed home can significantly affect your mood and well-being. According to studies, living in an environment that is aesthetically pleasing and customized to your tastes might help you feel less stressed and anxious, be more creative, and relax.

In addition to providing a sense of security and comfort, home décor can help you feel more rooted in and linked to your surroundings. You may design a home that promotes your emotional health by selecting furnishings and decor that make you happy and represent your personality.

Practical advantages: House décor can enhance a space’s practicality and efficiency in addition to its visual appeal. You may maximise your living spaces and cut down on clutter by combining storage options, organization techniques, and multi-functional furniture. A well-decorated home can also improve traffic flow, lighting, and acoustics, making it simpler to navigate and enjoy.” (1)

The colors you choose do matter:

“People often select objects in colors that evoke certain moods or feelings, such as selecting a car color that seems sporty, futuristic, sleek, or trustworthy. Room colors can also be used to evoke specific moods, such as painting a bedroom a soft green to create a peaceful mood.

Symbolic meanings that are often associated with different colors:

Red: Passion, excitement, love
Pink: Soft, reserved, earthy
Purple: Mysterious, noble, glamorous
Blue: Wisdom, hope, reason, peace
Green: Nature, growth, freshness
Yellow: Hope, joy, danger
Orange: Warmth, kindness, joy
White: Truth, indifference
Black: Noble, mysterious, cold

Feelings about color are often deeply personal and rooted in experience or culture. For example, while the color white is used in many Western countries to represent purity and innocence, it is seen as a symbol of mourning in many Eastern countries.” (2)

When considering what color to paint your home, first consider a warm color, which will convey an inviting environment. But a cool color can also convey a clean environment, so consider what you value. You can paint a patch on your wall or on some paper and tape it to your wall to give you time to process which color you actually love!

The colors you chose to decorate your home with don’t end with your wall color, but your furniture colors and accessory colors! At Dandelion Naturals, we offer a variety of accessories to make your home more functional, inviting, and with the goal in mind of creating a non-toxic environment. We offer skincare products that are made with only natural ingredients and are aesthetically pleasing.

Things to consider when decorating your home:
In recent years, many non-toxic products have become available, many of which have been developed simply by returning to the ‘old/ancestral ways’. Some ways to focus on low-toxin decorating are to ask these questions:
Is my furniture made from a natural material like linen, cotton, solid wood, or wool? And what is it stuffed with?
Are my side tables, coffee table, bookcases, TV stand etc, made out of solid wood or are they manufactured?
What are my rugs and floor made from, a manufactured material or a natural material?
What are the cleaning products I used made of? You may be cleaning your furniture with toxic chemicals that may be further adding to your toxic burden.
